| I began my career in the field of carpentry
in Austin Texas in 1973. I am fortunate to find something to do for a living
that I truly enjoy. The craft also opened up a trade with endless possibilities
to learn: It's mental exercise. I developed my skills toward becoming
a Master cabinetmaker and furniture maker.
I rented shop space and built up the necessary tools to accomplish my goals. I have owned, operated, and lived at my shop in Spicewood, Texas since 1995. I have based my skills around design, wood selection, structural integrity, and finish. The design and function the cabinets and furniture are usually the choice of my clients. I am capable of reading architectural drawings as well rendering my own drawings. I have had clients express their needs verbally, from sketches, from magazine or catalog photos, or from drawings rendered by architects or designers.
Most of my experience has been with shaker, craftsman, and contemporary designs. I put a lot of value on the selection and placement of wood in the piece of furniture I am building. I match grains and colorations to give a sense of balance and harmony to a project. I have always felt that the inside of cabinets and furniture should be as nice as the outside. I use ¾” plywood in all my cabinet-carcass and drawer construction and ¼’’ plywood for cabinet backs and drawer bottoms. I used hardwoods in all furniture construction. I build my products with the intent that they will long outlast both you and I and structural integrity is the basis of this concept. I research and use the best types of joinery suited for different designs. I put a high premium on excellence of joinery.
Craftsmanship is always standing proud in my work. I appreciate the natural beauty of all types of woods, so when I have a choice in the matter of finish, I use natural oil finishes. I have used 100% pure tung oil on most of the various pieces I have made. Tung oil is not resistant to moisture, therefore requires some care and maintenance on the part of the owner. I prefer the penetrating oil finishes so that one can actually feel the wood. I stay current with new developments in finishes and can offer you other alternatives to Tung oil, just ask. I have had the good fortune to have processed mesquite from the field through the saw mill to the shop to be stickered and air dried one year per inch. This requires a great deal of patience, which seems to be an attribute I have acquired through the years: Quality requires patience. The mesquite products I have made, other than the bookcase and highboy dresser of drawers, are each made from an individual tree trunk, which is the ideal integrity of a piece of furniture.
I find it very satisfying to produce fine works of wood knowing that a family will live their daily lives with my work and pass it on to their heirs for time immemorial. Please feel free to email me or call me with any questions you may have. I enjoy communicating with everyone, clients and the curious. |
